Dear Art Lover: Please Become a Member Today

Whether your passion is dance, literature, theatre, or the visual arts, your membership in the Cedar City Arts Council (CCAC) will place you within an expanding network of artists and art lovers seeking to grow the arts in our community.

In the past year, the Arts Council has supported emerging artists with over $5,000 in grants; has conducted art socials, professional development classes for artists, literary reading groups, summer art walks, the Tour of Utah chalk drawing event, art labs for grade school through high school students; and advocated for RAP tax funds that will grow our remarkable creative economy that contributes more than $42 million in local economic impact.

A twelve-month membership is only $25 for individuals, $35 for a family, $10 for students, $50 for a non-profit, and $75 for a business.  Signing up takes only a few minutes, and can be completed online or by mail (See below). As a member, you can participate for free in any of our paid activities, and if you wish, volunteer in any of our new committees.

Artist Mini-Grant Applications Due Aug. 31

The Cedar City Arts Council encourages individual artists and arts organizations to apply for the Artists’ Mini-Grants Awards due Aug. 31.  Application and more information at http://www. cedarcityartscouncil.org/? page_id=141

Past projects have included educational workshops in creating jewelry, music for groups from children’s choirs to quartets, printing art collection books, equipment to improve photography for the Southern Utah Space Foundation educational series, and bringing in artists for workshops to benefit local artists.

Grant funds may be used to purchase supplies or equipment, rent displays or performance venues, support mileage or registration costs to attend educational or training sessions, purchase promotional advertising, or other needs as demonstrated in the grant application.

It is helpful to include samples of previous work with the application. The CCAC Grants Committee reviews the applications and is pleased to offer several grants each cycle.  Members of the CCAC help fund this project with their memberships to increase the artist offerings of our area.  Membership information at http://www. cedarcityartscouncil.org/? page id=278

All of the artists receiving awards are committed to sharing their skills and creations to enhance the cultural atmosphere of Cedar City.  Many of them will present in the upcoming socials presented by the Cedar City Arts Council.

August Final Friday – Last event of the summer!

Our last Final Friday event of the summer is going to be the best- with fantastic art demonstrations, live music, prizes, food, and fun!

The event takes place August 28 from 6 to 8 p.m. in and near downtown Cedar City and SUU. You can download an Art Walk map here, or pick one up from Artisan’s Art Gallery or The Grind Coffeehouse. Bring your family and friends for a fun-filled  night of arts and culture, and don’t forget to participate in our stamp card program!

Events

Artisan’s Art Gallery: Live music, refreshments, representatives from Orchestra of Southern Utah, the Cedar City Arts Council, and Utah Shakespeare Festival. USF will also be giving away tickets to a fall season play. Award-winning photographer Robert Hall will have his large-format camera for visitors to look through. Photographer Cody Smith will be exhibiting his pieces about the plight of captive wild animals, 50% of all his photography sales will benefit the Best Friends Animal Sanctuary in Kanab.

Braithwaite Fine Arts Gallery: Live music from the Southern Utah String Quartet and artist demonstrations by painters Larry Laskowski and Joey Favino.

Poser’s Place: Jessica Gerlach will be demonstrating letterpress printmaking and allowing visitors the chance to make their own print.

Stone Path Massage & Energy Center: Chair massages, 30 minute ionic foot baths for $10 ($30 value), and artist demonstration by Sierra Dickey from Layton, Utah.

El Rey Inn & Suites: Chip Wiggin will be demonstrating the inking and printing process using his homemade printing press. Shukos food truck will be outside.

Brick House Cafe: Ryan Larson will be demonstrating how to create cyanotype photography prints using photosensitive chemicals and the sun.

The Beverley Taylor Sorensen Center for the Arts Information Station:  At the booth, visitors can participate in giveaways and learn more about the Southern Utah Museum of Art and the new Utah Shakespeare Festival theatre.

We encourage participants to begin the Art Walk on the east side of town at the Heritage Center (105 North 100 East) and walk west on Center St./University Blvd. towards SUU Campus and the Utah Shakespeare Festival, ending at any of the locations on campus. The Final Friday Gallery Strolls are deliberately scheduled right before the Utah Shakespeare Festival performances, giving participants an opportunity for an exceptionally diverse arts and culture experience this summer.

The 2015 Cedar City Art Walk and the Final Friday Gallery Strolls are free and the public is encouraged to attend.

Poser’s Place: Designer/illustrator Jessica Gerlach will demonstrate the letterpress printing process. She will also give visitors the opportunity to print their own letterpress item.

El Rey Inn & Suites: Chip Wiggin will demonstrate the inking and printing process in traditional relief printmaking.

The Brick House Café: Musician Art Kaufman will be performing.

Art Walk Stamp Cards

This year we are starting a stamp card program for the Cedar City Art Walk!Punch Card Design Front
How it works:

Get a stamp card from one of the listed locations, then make sure to get stamped for each Art Walk exhibit you visit. Once you collect 8, take your card to Artisans Art Gallery to be entered in the Final Friday drawing.

During each Final Friday at Artisans, the winner for that month will be announced. Winners are not required to be present, but it is encouraged.

If you do not win, your entry card will be kept for the next drawing. You are also allowed to have multiple entries, given that you visit 8 locations again.

Main Street Books: Zak Mitchell will be showing off his cartooning skills at Main Street Books.

Poser’s Place: Designer/illustrator Jessica Gerlach will demonstrate the letterpress printing process. She will also give visitors the opportunity to print their own letterpress item.

El Rey Inn & Suites: Chip Wiggin will demonstrate the inking and printing process in traditional relief printmaking, and the food trucks will be there for those looking for a bite to eat.
