2020 Final Friday Art Walks
By: Shaylene Baruffi-Jensen

Due to current circumstances, 2020’s art walks will be a scaled-back version of the art walks you’ve visited over the years! Instead of an art-filled Center street, we will have music strategically placed among the downtown area. This Art Walk will feature a wide variety of musicians.

The Final Friday Art Walks feature various art forms; live folk music, contemporary, and classical music, art demonstrations, and art exhibitions. The Cedar City Arts Council invites you to our 2020 “trimmed down” Final Friday Art Walks on; July 31st, August 28th, and September 25th, from 5 to 8 p.m. These events are fun for the entire family. Remember to wear your masks and practice social distancing!

Our second Final Friday Art Walk will be on July 31st from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. and it will feature many wonderful artists. There will be artist demonstrations and art exhibitions on the green at 100 West and Center, including displays by the Sagebrush Fiber Artisans, Kevin Anderson, Cristy Elliot, Larry Laskowski, Alyssa Ripley, Karen Russell, The Southern Utah Watercolor Society, and Hanna Dawson. Performances will be presented throughout the evening in specific locations downtown.

The Southern Utah Museum of Art and Artisans Gallery will be hosting artist exhibits in harmony with these Final Friday Art Walks. IG Winery will host musical performances, Color Country Art Supply, along with other downtown businesses will have later hours for visitors to peruse. They will be adhering to safety procedures, follow their guidance.

More information is soon to come, stay tuned!
For updates about featured artists and musicians visit the Cedar City Art Walk page at https://www.facebook.com/Cedar-City-Art-Walk-488202448044670.  Remember to save the date for the later Final Friday Art Walks! Come out and get some fresh air safely at the Art Walk with us! Celebrate our city’s arts and culture this summer by bringing your family and friends to the Art Walk; we hope to see you there!

Spring 2020 Mini-Grants

“Meet Our Newest Mini-Grant Awardees”

by Mary Anne Andersen for Iron County Today Column

It is not unusual for an applicant for a Cedar City Arts Council Artists’ Mini-Grant to request funds to attend or sponsor a workshop or festival.  The anticipated gathering is meant to educate and/or improve the applicants’ artistic skills, which are in turn reflected in the participants’ artistic presence in the community.  The Council usually says yes.  But this year, things are up in the air.

In the current list of mini-grant awardees, there are four that fall within this category.  Ellyn Rock, a young violinist who aspires to play with the Orchestra of Southern Utah, asked for supplementary funds to attend the Bryce Canyon Music Camp in June.  The Sagebrush Fiber Artisans’ Guild is a sponsor of an advanced weaving workshop featuring a nationally-known fiber artist.  That workshop has already been postponed until May, 2021.  The Native American Student Association at SUU requested help with the costs of hosting the 41st annual Pow Wow here in Cedar City, featuring dancers and gorgeous costumes from local and surrounding Native American communities.  Cydnee Lee wants to attend a workshop in St. George to enhance her jewelry-making skills.  She will share that knowledge with students and clubs in the area.

Another grant is tied to a group event—-the annual Livestock and Heritage Festival scheduled for October.  The planners are announcing an original art contest to coincide with the festival this year;  it will be open to elementary, middle, and high school.  The awarded funds will purchase supplies, publicity, and prizes.  Surely by October this will come to pass.  School back in session will benefit from Melanie Baker’s request for money to purchase 4 glockenspiels for the music program at South Elementary.

There are three performing groups that will receive funds to continue performing for Iron County residents when circumstances allow.  You all have seen the Washburn Family Bluegrass Band perform.  Four years ago Nathan was given help to purchase a better banjo.  This year his brother William will have supplemental help to buy a new guitar.  And the group Full Tilt Boogie Band, known around town for their paid and charitable performances, will receive support to release a new album, increasing their presence in our community.   A group of middle schoolers plans to organize and perform under the name the Un4gettable String Quartet.  Their start-up requires music, equipment, and marketing.  Look for them at the Friday Art Walks and such.

Visual artist recipients include Maya Akpinar who will supply her photographs of the local natural habitat to public venues and schools, and Hanna Dawson, who will do the same with beautiful cyanotype prints of local flora.

Artist Megan Nelson will take advanced training from local experts in glass artistry.  Her enhanced skills will benefit her students.

What began as a thrilling prospect of grant awardees has been dampened by the unforeseeable circumstance of forced isolation.  Don’t despair, all.  The grants will be awarded;  we will applaud when the monies are able to be put to their intended uses.

Next application deadline August 31. Link below or on this website under support.

Fall Social on Monday

Celebrate local artists with The Cedar City Arts Council at our Fall Social on November 4th.
By: Shaylene Baruffi-Jensen

CEDAR CITY, UTAH: The Cedar City Arts Council’s Fall Social will take place on Monday, November 4, at 7 p.m. in the Frehner Rehearsal Hall in the Utah Shakespeare Festival Office Building. This event is free, and everyone is invited to attend. These events showcase and celebrate local artists who have received mini-grants from the Cedar City Arts Council. Our socials offer live music, art displays, and reports on the use that the recipients have made of their awarded funds.

The Cedar City Arts Council selects a spectacular individual who has done much for the arts in our community, this year we are bestowing our Arts Award to Todd Prince. Todd Prince was born and raised in Salt Lake City, Utah. Prince has worked in the Southwestern United States as an archaeologist, museum curator, adjunct professor, and State Park Manager since 1989. Prince currently lives in Cedar City, Utah serving as the manager of the Frontier Homestead State Museum. He served as the Cedar City Arts Council President for several crucial years and helped develop a local arts festival. His personal art form transforms gourds that are available at the ArtWorks Gallery.

Our Fall social will include a presentation by Sue Cotter. She is an artist bookmaker, letterpress printer, and assemblage artist who began her art career at a very early age. In 1988, Cotter discovered a passion for Book Art. Cotter has received many grants and awards including the Utah Artist Fellowship and a New Forms Grant from the Andy Warhol Foundation.

There will also be a performance by “Let’s Play Music”, a curriculum for children ages 4 through 7 developed by Shelle Soelberg. The program is a three-year program that focuses on instilling a passion for music in young people. Kathleen Wells and her students will present the program and discuss what their mini-grant funds helped them achieve.

Our third presenter is Stephanie Flores of A&E Design Studio in Cedar City. Flores will introduce her Art, Entertainment & Design Studio. This studio was created with the purpose of providing our community with a space to create and to provide access to the arts. Flores focuses on bringing the community together and providing access to art and crafts, especially to children and adults who might not have it otherwise.

Matthew Oftedahl will display a wide range of his artwork including 3D printed figurines, custom armor, illustrated characters, necklaces, potion bottles, and resin crystals.

ICAMA will also have a display about their acoustic music series.

Refreshments are being catered by Palette Bakery. Come celebrate some of our local artists at this fun and free event!

 Social at 7:30 at SUMA

Join the Cedar City Arts Council for their July Social. Celebrate the Arts!

By  Shaylene Baruffi-Jensen

CEDAR CITY, UT: The Cedar City Arts Council sponsors networking socials for the community three times a year to assist the public in becoming familiar with some of the artists that live here in Iron County.  The Cedar City Arts Council’s next free public social will be Friday, July 26, at 7:30 p.m. in the large classroom at The Southern Utah Museum of Art (SUMA). These events are meant to showcase and celebrate some of the artists who have received mini-grants from the Council.  Our objective is to provide live music, art displays, and exciting details on the use that the recipients have made of their awarded funds.

Our Summer Social will be packed with entertainment provided by Women of Will Theatre, music by guitarist Jake Parkinson, and a look at the “Art of Wool”.

Women of Will theatre is “an organization dedicated to providing honest theatre by women, for all, by balancing opportunities, taking risks, and providing quality work.” Women of Will was founded in 2017 by Samae Allred, Britannia Howe, Kaitlin Mills, and Alexana Stavros. The group’s initial production was of Shakespeare’s Julius Caesar, it was a very successful production and they continued in 2018 with Pericles. This October of 2019, Women of Will’s all-women production of Comedy of Errors will take the stage. Be sure to keep a lookout for more information as October draws closer. Women of Will will present a scene from Pericles at The Cedar City Arts Council’s Summer Social.

Music will be performed by Jake Parkinson. He will perform some of his original guitar pieces, including one of his audiences’ favorites. Jake Parkinson is a singer/songwriter from St. George, Utah. Most of his musical experience was fostered through various choirs, and musicals throughout his childhood where he developed a passion for all types of music. He enjoys blending different genres into acoustic stylings and exploring emotion in art.

Additionally, Shelley Schneider, will present her “Art of Wool” fiber art work. Shelley has been interested in the fiber arts: wet-felting and needle-felting for a while. She wanted to know more about these “lost arts.”  Shelley Schnieder states, “Art is very important to me as a mother who wants to educate my children well, but also help them to express themselves in good and beautiful ways. And this opportunity has been a beautiful experience of integrating both learning and creating…as families and a community”.  Schnieder used her grant funds to purchase tools in order to practice this craft with a dedicated group of crafters and to teach community classes.

Refreshments will be provided by Chartwells.  The Cedar City Arts Council’s second Final Friday Art Walk is at 5pm on July 26th. Head over and celebrate more art with us at our Summer Social in the SUMA Classroom after the art walk!
